Eclipse day

27 March 2015

A total solar eclipse occurred on March 20, 2015. High level of eclipse consequences were expected due to sunny weather in the two countries most producers of solar energy, Germany and Italy. In latest forecasts, a decrease of solar power production around 21.1GW and 8.2GW expected at 12:00 respectively.

For helping Transmissions Systems Operators, Coreso provided solar infeed forecasts from three days ahead to the morning of the eclipse day.

During the day ahead process, Coreso analyzed the loss and gain of solar infeed in Germany and compensated it on the French, Netherlands and Switzerland net positions in order to ensure N-1 criteria under critical imbalance condition.

In real-time, observed infeed followed closely the forecasted infeed in Germany and in France compared to Coreso D-1 report.

The real-time operational situation was under good control: the area control error (ACE) values of France, Germany, Italy and Belgium were kept close to zero during the whole phenomenon.
